Cosmetic Dentistry at Smile Design Dentistry
Patients choose cosmetic dentistry for an array of reasons—to repair chips and cracks, treat an injury, or just improve their overall appearance.
Regardless of what your reason for a smile improvement is, cosmetic dentistry works to help you look younger and healthier.
Cosmetic dentistry is one of the fastest growing areas of dentistry today and is a vital part of the dental profession. With the help of your cosmetic dentist, you can improve your smile and repair the dental damage that you have been putting off for years in just a few appointments. A healthy, attractive smile can make you feel younger and more confident—an investment that is well worth it. Today there is a wide array of cosmetic dental treatments available.
Cosmetic Dentistry Treatments:
* Teeth whitening
- This is the simplest way to make a substantial improvement in the appearance of your teeth. Teeth whitening can be done at home, or in the dental office.
- For the at-home whitening your dentist will make custom whitening trays for you and provide professional strength whitening gel to use. It is an easy process that typically takes two weeks to achieve a nice, white shade. This option is very nice option to remove common staining agents like coffee and tobacco.
- For those looking for more immediate whitening results or have difficult stains (i.e. the antibiotic tetracycline can leave tough stains on teeth after taking) the in-office option may be a better choice for you. It is supervised by the dental staff and used the highest concentration of bleach possible. You will see results when finished!
- There is also a combination of in-office and take-home whitening that can be done and offers the highest level of teeth whitening.
* Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a popular dental technique used to repair teeth, replace silver amalgam fillings and repair cracks. It can also be used as a lower cost option (compared to veneers) to enhance your smile. Bonding is made of a composite material that can be placed over your natural teeth. As the name suggests it actually bonds to your natural tooth. Since it covers the tooth it can be made any shade of white you wish and can be used for minor shaping of the tooth. While a less expensive option than veneers (below) it is not as durable and long lasting.
* Dental veneers
Veneers are a great option for patients that are looking to enhance their smiles in more ways than one. Veneers are a porcelain covering that is placed over the front of your tooth. It can be made any shade of white you wish and be fabricated in such a way that it can also re-shape the tooth for you. This is the best option for cosmetics because of the flexibility combined with the strength to give you the smile you have always dreamed of!
When you are missing a tooth, or multiple teeth, dental implants offer a permanent solution to fill in gaps where teeth are missing. Formerly a dental “bridge” was routinely used but implants have proven to be extremely strong. Also, there is no need to change the tooth structure of the natural teeth next to the implant like you need to do with a bridge. For these reasons dentists more and more are recommending an implant option for missing teeth.
When one thinks of cosmetic care braces don’t normally come to mind as it is thought of more as a treatment for children. However, with the advancement in technology, many adults are choosing braces to help cosmetically with their smile. Invisalign braces have become a very popular choice for adults. It is because they are clear molds that fit over your teeth and can be removed for eating. No more “brace face” or the struggle to get food unstuck from the old wires after lunch or dinner. Braces are an excellent solution to those who want nice, straight teeth.
Combination of dental treatments
Many times it may not be one specific orthodontic treatment that gives you the smile of your dreams but a combination. Let’s say you are not happy with the color of your teeth or their crooked appearance. As I said before bond or veneers can help to shape teeth. But if the amount of change needed to provide a straight appearance may be more that bonding or veneers can help with. In those cased your dentist may recommend starting with braces and when that portion of treatment is complete finish with veneers to provide the stunning smile. If you happen to be missing a tooth an implant could also be combined into your treatment plan to complete your journey to a new smile.
